Chapter 2 - THE OWNER WHO KNEW THE HUNGRY MAN.
Margaret Hayes arrived in a black town car, but she did not embrace her father.
She looked at Walter’s torn coat and whispered, “You were supposed to remain at the residence.”
Ethan realized the diner owner had known exactly who the hungry man was.
Collins rushed to defend himself.
“Mr. Hayes was disturbing customers. I protected the business.”
Walter tapped one crutch against the floor.
“You protected wealthy customers from seeing the man whose money opened this diner.”
Margaret explained that Walter had suffered a stroke and transferred temporary control of Hayes Dining Group to her. She claimed he was confused and had wandered away.
Walter answered every question clearly, including the diner’s daily revenue and Ethan’s employee number.
Then he asked for the hardship ledger.
Collins said no such ledger existed.
Ethan remembered workers signing a “meal adjustment” whenever food was given away or an order was returned. The cost was deducted from their tips.
Walter opened the medallion.

It unlocked a drawer beneath the register containing years of those deductions—and a document naming Ethan as a beneficiary of the Lighthouse Society.
