Chapter 5 - THE POLICE CHIEF WHO CLOSED HER CASE.

Former Chief Harold Collins arrived with an attorney and called Walter’s accusations the memories of a confused old man.
Ethan held up the medallion.
“This belonged to workers you accused of theft.”
Harold said Sarah confessed voluntarily and abandoned her son.
Rosa answered, “A rich father protects his child by buying a house. A poor mother protects hers under threat, and you call it abandonment.”
Bank records proved Harold received payments from Hayes Dining Group after closing the investigation. In exchange, he labeled missing pension money an internal dispute.
Richard admitted his father secured the manager position for him.
“I worked hard after that.”
Ethan replied, “Hard work does not erase the door privilege opened.”
Walter asked Margaret why she kept paying Harold.
She said scandal would have destroyed thousands of jobs.
A dishwasher called from the kitchen, “Our jobs are always the shield placed in front of your fortune.”
Then Walter’s attorney arrived with Sarah’s sealed file.
Inside was a current photograph of her working at a shelter in Maine.
