Chapter 1 - THE BRACELETS THAT MARKED THE CHILDREN.
Daniel stopped at the basement door while Lily clung to his shoulder.
The phone on the table played Vanessa’s voice: “Make sure the basement camera stays off.”
Lily pointed at the lock. “There’s another child down there.”
Police arrived with paramedics before Margaret could hide the key. Behind the door they found nine-year-old Noah sitting in a finished storage room with water, blankets and a reading lamp. He was frightened but conscious and unharmed.
Vanessa called him a troubled foster child placed there for quiet time.
Noah looked at Daniel. “They said nobody would believe a kid whose mother cleans houses.”
On his wrist was a bracelet identical to Lily’s.
Daniel set Lily safely beside an officer and examined both bands. Each carried the emblem of the Bennett Family Center, a private child-welfare charity chaired by Margaret.
Robert finally lifted his head.

“They mark which children come with property.”
