Daniel stared at the false date.

Lily’s mother, Claire Bennett, had spent her final months challenging the family center after discovering children were being used to seize housing.

Margaret insisted the early certificate was only an insurance correction.

“A mother died,” Daniel said. “You edited her life like a billing error.”

Robert admitted signing the form. Vanessa had told him the date protected Lily’s health coverage.

Lily whispered, “Grandpa, did you know Mommy was alive?”

Robert could not meet her eyes.

The certificate allowed Margaret to become temporary trustee of the Queens duplex before Claire could place it in Lily’s name. Rent from two working families then paid the Bennett Center’s legal fees.

Noah’s mother, Rosa Alvarez, had cleaned that same duplex. When she questioned missing rent, Vanessa reported her as unstable and took Noah “for evaluation.”

A detective opened Claire’s archived complaint.

Daniel’s signature appeared beneath a withdrawal request.

He remembered signing school paperwork after the funeral.
