Chapter 8 - THE SISTER WHO TURNED PAIN INTO PROFIT.

Vanessa claimed she was Evelyn’s daughter, born before Evelyn married Daniel’s father.

Margaret had raised her privately and told the public she was a family friend’s child to avoid scandal.

Daniel looked at the woman who had terrified Lily.

“You knew our mother built the center to protect children.”

Vanessa’s face hardened.

“I also knew she left me with nothing while you received her name, her home and everyone’s sympathy.”

Rosa replied, “Being wronged did not give you the right to build income from other mothers’ grief.”

DNA records confirmed the sibling connection, but the child advocate rejected blood as automatic authority. Evelyn’s bylaws required ethical fitness and an elected family council.

Vanessa’s claim was suspended pending criminal review.

Then investigators traced the broken wineglass. The bottle on the table contained a sedative frequently used before competency evaluations. Robert admitted Margaret planned to make Daniel appear impaired when police arrived.

Margaret denied pouring it.

Lily pointed toward the half-finished meal.
