Daniel had been told Evelyn Reed died before the Bennett Center opened.
Robert revealed she was a public-school counselor who organized tenants against wrongful removals. She used a discrimination settlement to create free legal aid.
Margaret married into the Bennett family, took control after Evelyn’s death and converted the program into a private guardianship pipeline.
“She used your mother’s name while doing the opposite of her work,” Rosa said.
A foundation ledger showed Evelyn’s fund paid Daniel’s college tuition after Margaret dismissed him as “too ordinary” for the family business.
Daniel looked at the families whose homes were taken.
“My education benefited from money meant to defend them.”
He placed his inheritance and pension under restitution review.
Investigators then found Evelyn’s original bylaws. Any board member who profited from a child’s removal lost all authority.
Margaret’s shares were immediately suspended.
But the final page carried a handwritten exception.
It gave permanent control to Evelyn’s surviving daughter.
Daniel stared at Robert.
