Chapter 1 - The Key Inside the Elephant

Maya entered the house after a fourteen-hour hospital shift and found five-year-old Noah curled on the tile beside empty pizza boxes and scattered toys. “Noah! Baby, wake up!” He opened his eyes and clung to her. “Mom… I was scared.” She carried him down the hallway and pushed open the bedroom door. Jason and Amber jerked upright beneath the gray blanket. “Maya—wait!” Jason shouted. Her voice became colder than the room. “You left my son on the floor for this?” Amber looked away. Jason said Noah had fallen asleep while watching television. Maya pointed to the locked bedroom door. “He knocked until his hands hurt.” Jason sneered, “You work nights. Do not pretend you know what happens in this house.” Noah whispered, “Dad said nurses are servants and servants do not give orders.” Maya removed her wedding ring. Then she noticed Amber wearing the gold bracelet that belonged to Maya’s late mother. Inside its clasp was a tiny key—and Jason’s face went pale.
