Chapter 8 - The Signature Taken From Her Grief
Maya remembered nothing about the video because she had been sedated after a night shift. Carter told her Helen suffered a fatal reaction and asked her to sign emergency forms. The footage showed Maya dazed, crying and unable to read. Jason guided her hand across the documents, then used the signatures to authorize Helen’s confinement. Maya stared at the screen. “You turned my grief into consent.” Jason answered, “I kept your life from collapsing.” Noah looked at him. “You only keep people safe when they do what you want.” The court rejected Jason’s custody petition and ordered supervised contact only. Amber testified that Carter planned to replace Maya with her after gaining Noah’s trust. But Amber had hidden one more fact: she was Helen’s daughter from a teenage pregnancy and Maya’s older half-sister. Carter had adopted her privately. Amber whispered, “I helped them destroy the family that should have been mine.” Then Helen said, “Carter did not adopt you. She bought you.”
