Chapter 3 - The Supervisor Who Exhausted Her
Dr. Carter arrived with a family-law attorney before police finished taking statements. She called Maya exhausted, volatile and unsafe around patients. “Your career has been deteriorating for months.” Maya looked at the woman who denied her leave and assigned every holiday shift. “You worked me until I could barely stand, then used my exhaustion against me.” Payroll records showed Jason had received consulting payments from Carter’s private clinic. Amber worked there as a fundraiser. Together they planned to force Maya from the hospital, take Noah and control his trust. Jason insisted the money would provide a better life. “Private schools, a real neighborhood, people who matter.” Maya answered, “You mean people who inherited more than they earned.” Noah handed police his stuffed elephant. “Grandma said to hide this if Dad got mean.” Inside was a recorder. The first voice belonged to Maya’s mother, who had supposedly died two years earlier.
