Chapter 4 - The Mother They Declared Dead

The recording revealed Maya’s mother, Helen, discovered the clinic charged low-income patients for treatments already covered by charity funds. She threatened to report Carter and Jason, who managed the billing software. Later, Helen died in what was called a medication error. On the recording she said, “If anything happens to me, Jason knows why.” Maya turned toward her husband. “You let me bury my mother while knowing she was investigating you.” Jason shouted that Helen was confused and obsessed with money. Maya replied, “Poor women are called confused whenever they understand the books too well.” Police reopened the case. Carter accused Helen of stealing. A former orderly named Luis stepped forward. “She did not steal. She found patients being billed after they died.” Carter sneered, “You empty trash cans. Stay in your lane.” Luis answered, “Your crimes were in the trash.” Then investigators found Helen’s death certificate had been signed twelve hours before she was pronounced dead.
