THE CHILD SHE HID / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Elevator

The steel doors began closing around Lily.

She stood inside the service elevator in her ivory flower-girl dress, crying so quietly that the wedding music nearly covered her voice.

Claire pressed the close button again.

Maya saw everything.

She rushed down the corridor and placed the edge of her silver tray across the sensor zone. The doors immediately stopped and reopened.

Claire turned sharply.

“You’re ruining my wedding!”

Maya set the tray down and reached for Lily’s offered hand.

The six-year-old stepped into the corridor and collapsed against her uniform.

“She said Uncle Daniel didn’t want me upstairs.”

Maya looked at Claire.

“Did you tell her that?”

Claire’s expression hardened.

“This is a private family issue.”

Lily opened her small fist.

A black smartphone rested in her palm.

“I found this on the floor.”

A voice memo was already playing.

Claire’s recorded voice filled the corridor:

“Keep her downstairs until the vows are over.”

Footsteps stopped behind them.

Daniel stood at the ballroom entrance.

He had heard every word.

Claire reached toward the phone.

“Daniel, listen—”

He stepped between her and Lily.

No contact.

Just a boundary.

Then he removed the gold band from his finger and placed it gently onto Maya’s silver tray.

“Take Lily upstairs.”

His eyes remained on Claire.

“There’s no wedding.”

The elevator doors closed behind her.

Claire stared at the ring.

“You would cancel everything over one frightened child?”

Daniel lifted Lily into his arms.

“She isn’t one child.”

A pause.

“She’s the reason you needed the vows completed before six o’clock.”

May you like

Claire’s face turned pale.

Because Daniel had finally remembered the document scheduled to activate five minutes after their marriage.
