THE CHILD SHE HID / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - The Service Floor

The staff elevator opened again.

This time, no one stood inside.

A single white envelope rested on the floor.

The hotel manager picked it up and handed it to Daniel.

Inside was the original employee-housing deed.

The workers did not own only the nine apartment buildings.

Their trust held forty percent of the Chicago hotel itself.

The company had concealed that ownership for thirty-five years.

Charles had used employee shares as collateral for private family loans.

If the truth became public, the workers could claim years of unpaid profits.

Claire’s father’s redevelopment deal was meant to erase those records before an audit.

Daniel looked toward Maya.

“My family stole from the people who work here.”

Maya answered quietly:

“Your family called it management.”

The envelope contained one more document.

A sworn guardianship declaration.

It claimed Daniel was emotionally incapable of caring for Lily after Emma’s death.

If approved, Charles would become Lily’s guardian and control her shares immediately.

The declaration carried Claire’s signature.

Daniel looked at her.

“You signed this too?”

She began crying.

“Your father said you would destroy the company for that child.”

Daniel held her gaze.

“And you believed him.”

“Yes.”

The truth was ugly.

But the final signature was worse.

The supporting family witness was Daniel.

His name had been notarized eight months earlier.

He stared at the page.

“I never signed this.”

Lily looked frightened.

Maya placed one arm around her.

The hotel manager examined the notary stamp.

The document had been executed inside the staff office on the service floor.

At a time Daniel’s keycard showed he was there.

Alone.

Daniel went pale.

“I went downstairs to meet my father.”

“What did you sign?” Maya asked.

“A hotel renovation authorization.”

Again.

A powerful man had signed without reading.

Again, someone poorer and smaller had been placed at risk.

Then the service elevator descended by itself.

The floor indicator stopped below the basement level.

A location missing from the public hotel plans.

The doors opened on the monitor.

Charles stood inside a private archive room beside hundreds of employee ownership files.

He looked directly into the camera.

Then lifted one document.

Emma’s original will.

His voice came through the elevator intercom:

“Daniel, Lily was never meant to inherit those shares.”

A pause.

“Her mother left them to Maya.”

Lily looked up at the server holding her hand.

Maya stopped breathing.

And Charles smiled.

May you like

“Now ask her why she never told you she was Emma’s legal sister.”

TO BE CONTINUED.
