Chapter 8 - Emma’s Warning
Emma’s recording played through the ballroom speakers.
“Daniel, Claire’s family will try to call the apartments charity.”
Her voice was tired but clear.
“They are not charity. The employees paid for them.”
Daniel lowered his eyes.
“They will say Lily needs elite schooling.”
“What they mean is that a child is easier to control when everyone she trusts is far away.”
Claire turned pale.
Emma had predicted the plan.
The recording continued:
“If Daniel signs without reading, do not excuse him because he loves Lily.”
Every face turned toward him.
“Carelessness from a powerful person can be as destructive as cruelty from a dishonest one.”
Daniel accepted the words without protest.
Then Emma addressed Maya.
“You may be wearing a uniform when this happens.”
Maya stopped breathing.
“They will use it to make your truth look smaller.”
Several wealthy guests looked away.
Claire had done exactly that.
She called Maya a waitress.
A servant.
A stranger interfering in family matters.
Emma continued:
“Open the door anyway.”
Lily reached for Maya’s hand.
The employee representatives formally restored Emma’s name as co-founder of the housing trust.
Her portrait would hang in the hotel lobby—not inside a private boardroom, but beside photographs of the workers who financed the buildings.
Claire’s father’s development company was barred from bidding on employee property.
The wedding was officially canceled.
But Emma’s recording had one final section.
“Claire is not the only person who wants Lily’s shares.”
