Chapter 2 - The Deadline
The document was called a marital guardianship amendment.
Claire had presented it as emergency protection for Lily.
Daniel had signed only the summary page.
He had never seen the attachment.
At 6:05 p.m., immediately after the ceremony, Claire would become Lily’s co-guardian.
At 6:10, she could authorize residential education, medical decisions and temporary property management without Daniel’s additional signature.
The wedding was not merely romantic.
It was a legal deadline.
Daniel looked at his bride.
“You planned to gain control of Lily tonight.”
“I planned to give her structure.”
“She has a home.”
“She has a bedroom in your house.”
The distinction was deliberate.
To Claire, Lily lived there.
She did not belong there.
Lily was Daniel’s late sister Emma’s daughter. After Emma died, Daniel promised the child she would never be sent away.
Claire had smiled when he told her.
Behind closed doors, she called Lily difficult.
Too emotional.
Too attached to the hotel staff.
Too ordinary for the family photographs Claire wanted published after the wedding.
Maya held Lily’s hand.
The child looked down at her repaired shoes.
Claire had ordered designer shoes for every bridesmaid.
Lily’s pair never arrived.
Maya used white ribbon to cover the scuffed straps.
Claire called the result embarrassing.
Daniel’s voice dropped.
“Where were you sending her?”
Claire said nothing.
The hotel manager arrived carrying a folder found inside the bridal suite.
The first page belonged to Hawthorne Residential Academy in upstate New York.
Lily’s enrollment began Monday.
Year-round boarding.
No holiday release without guardian approval.
Daniel stared at Claire.
“Our honeymoon starts Monday.”
“Yes.”
“You planned to send her away while I was out of the country.”
Claire lifted her chin.
“It is an elite school.”

“She said poor children should be grateful when rich people improve them.”
