Chapter 7 - Daniel Signed
Daniel stared at the page.
“I never approved this.”
Claire folded her arms.
“You signed the education package.”
“You told me it was for Lily’s summer program.”
“It was an educational decision.”
“It was boarding school.”
“You did not ask.”
The sentence silenced him.
Claire had deceived him.
But she was right about one thing.
He had signed without reading.
Lily had nearly lost her home because reviewing the full document felt less urgent than wedding arrangements and investor calls.
Daniel knelt so he was level with her.
“I signed something that could have sent you away.”
Lily looked at him.
“Didn’t you want me?”
His face broke.
“Yes.”
“Then why didn’t you read it?”
No executive language could answer a child’s question.
“I was careless.”
Lily pressed closer to Maya.
Daniel did not demand forgiveness.
That mattered too.
He ordered the Hawthorne fee recovered from his personal trust, not from Claire and not from Lily’s inheritance.
Then he temporarily surrendered his guardianship authority to an independent family court advocate until every document was reviewed.
Claire stared at him.
“You are giving strangers control of your family.”
“No.”
“I am admitting that love does not make me automatically trustworthy.”
The employee council convened.
Housekeepers, kitchen staff, maintenance workers and retired residents joined the vote.
They elected permanent representatives to the housing board.
No family member could sell the apartments without employee approval again.
Claire watched her father’s redevelopment plan collapse.
Then the hotel manager found an older voice memo on her phone.
