Chapter 3 - The Flower Girl
Claire denied saying it.
Lily repeated the sentence exactly.
No embellishment.
No adult language added.
Just the words a wealthy woman believed a child would never understand well enough to report.
Guests had begun gathering at the ballroom entrance.
Claire lowered her voice.
“Do not turn this into a public spectacle.”
Maya looked at Lily’s tearful face.
“You already did.”
That answer angered Claire more than Daniel’s canceled wedding.
A server was not supposed to speak with equal authority.
Maya was supposed to carry trays, lower her eyes and disappear after being useful.
Claire looked at Daniel.
“You’re trusting hotel staff over your future wife.”
Daniel looked at Maya’s uniform.
Then at the child holding her hand.
“She opened the doors.”
Claire had no response.
The wedding coordinator arrived with a replacement procession card.
Lily’s name had been removed.
A wealthy investor’s seven-year-old niece had been selected as flower girl instead.
The new child’s family was considering placing sixty million dollars into Claire’s father’s real-estate fund.
Claire called it a necessary adjustment.
Daniel called it what it was.
“You replaced my niece with a donor’s child.”
“The photographs matter.”
“To whom?”
“To everyone watching our family.”
Lily’s lower lip trembled.
“I practiced every night.”
Maya crouched beside her.
“I know.”
She had watched Lily walk the hotel hallway after service shifts, dropping paper petals and counting steps.
Claire had never attended once.
Then the manager opened the enrollment folder.
Attached was a property-management authorization.
Hawthorne Academy was not merely a school.
