Chapter 1 - THE BABY IN EVELYN’S ARMS.

Champagne spread across the marble near Jonathan Vale’s shoes. He dropped a folded towel in front of Evelyn.
“Clean it. That is what people like you are paid for.”
Evelyn reached for the towel without kneeling. Before she could touch it, eleven-year-old Caleb stepped between them.
“Do not humiliate my grandmother. She sold her house to pay for the surgery that saved your life.”
Jonathan’s smile vanished. Victoria Vale ordered security to remove them, but the Board Chair stopped everyone.
Caleb placed an old hospital bracelet, a house key, a receipt and a thank-you letter on the board table. Jonathan recognized his childhood initials.
Evelyn said, “Your family had nothing. I gave what I had.”
Victoria snapped that Evelyn had been an anonymous donor.
The Board Chair opened the sealed file. Evelyn had also been Jonathan’s emergency guardian.
Jonathan demanded an explanation.
Evelyn held up an old photograph of herself cradling a newborn.
“Because you were not a stranger when I gave you away.”

Victoria dropped her glass.
Then Jonathan noticed the baby’s bracelet carried a different last name.
