Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER TAKEN FROM NAOMI.
Caleb’s mother, Denise, had died two years earlier. Evelyn had believed she was her biological daughter.
The hidden file showed Denise was born to Naomi while Naomi was under guardianship. Hospital lawyers removed the baby and placed her with Evelyn without telling either woman.
Caleb stared at his grandmother.
“So my mom was your granddaughter?”
Evelyn held his hand.
“She was my daughter in every way that mattered.”
Jonathan refused to let blood become another ownership weapon.
“Caleb is a child, not a voting mechanism.”
The court appointed an independent advocate and froze every transfer connected to him.
Naomi appeared by secure video. Her first question was not about money.
“Did Denise know I was alive?”
Then a social worker recovered Denise’s journal. She had discovered Naomi’s identity months before her death and planned to expose the hospital.
Her final entry read:
JONATHAN KNOWS WHERE THE ORIGINAL BIRTH LEDGER IS.
Every face turned toward him.
“I have never seen it,” Jonathan said.
