Chapter 4 - THE HEIR THEY STOLE FROM A LAUNDRY WORKER.
A handwriting expert confirmed the signature was copied from Evelyn’s surgery consent.
Victoria blamed a deceased clerk. The Board Chair produced a memo bearing Victoria’s initials: REMOVE BIOLOGICAL MOTHER FROM FUTURE CONTACT.
Jonathan’s anger finally broke.
“You built my life by erasing hers.”
Victoria said she had rescued him from poverty.
Evelyn replied, “You rescued a valuable heir. You left his mother scrubbing the floor outside his room.”
Jonathan asked why he had been so valuable.
The answer lay in the founder’s charter. The first child successfully treated by the hospital’s experimental heart program would inherit a controlling vote in the foundation. Evelyn’s payment allowed Jonathan to become that child.
Victoria married his adoptive father, moved the vote into the Vale family, and buried Evelyn’s guardianship.
The board froze Jonathan’s vote pending investigation. He did not object.
Then Caleb found a second photograph in the file.
It showed Evelyn holding two newborns.
Jonathan stared at the other baby.
“Who is she?”
Evelyn whispered, “Your sister.”
