Chapter 6 - THE DEAD DOCTOR ABOVE THE RESEARCH WING.
Security located Marcus Vale in a private apartment above the hospital research wing.
He had faked his death after federal investigators began examining the family-care fund. Victoria kept him hidden while he continued signing guardianship orders.
Marcus said, “Everything we did protected this institution.”
Evelyn answered, “Institutions do not feel pain. People do.”
Marcus admitted the hospital targeted uninsured mothers with medically fragile babies. Families were offered treatment in exchange for guardianship transfers, while the foundation collected public reimbursement and private donations.
Jonathan asked how many children had been separated.
Marcus refused until the Board Chair opened a cabinet containing seventy-two files.
Caleb stared at the rows of names.
“You did this to all of them?”
Victoria blamed Marcus. He laughed.
“She designed the legal structure. I signed the diagnoses.”
Jonathan surrendered his executive authority and requested an outside prosecutor.
Then investigators found one file with Caleb’s name.
Evelyn gripped the table.
