Blake had grown up believing his father, William Mercer, was a young estate manager who invested wisely.
The payroll ledger showed the real employee was Thomas Reed, a maintenance technician who vanished after discovering missing trust payments.
William had used Thomas’s Social Security number to collect wages, pension credits and eventually a trustee vote.
Margaret called it an administrative error from decades ago.
Rosa answered, “When a poor man uses the wrong number, you call it fraud. When a wealthy family builds a fortune from it, you call it history.”
Federal investigators were contacted. Blake’s business loan was suspended, and the guests learned his celebrated inheritance began with another worker’s stolen identity.
Emily removed her engagement ring but did not ask the room to praise her.
Then Noah opened one of the delivery bags.
Beneath the food containers was a sealed envelope mailed by Thomas Reed before his disappearance.
The letter said William Mercer had not acted alone.
