Chapter 2 - THE MEDICINE MEANT FOR THE SERVANT.
Victoria claimed Emily had mixed up the medication packets.
“She is careless. That is why she works for wages instead of managing anything important.”
Emily’s humiliation turned into anger.
“I never took that medicine. You told me it was for Mrs. Ashford’s nerves.”
Richard examined the prescription.
The drug was a powerful sedative ordered through a private clinic owned by the Ashford Foundation.
The patient file described Emily as unstable, dishonest, and emotionally attached to Evelyn.
No doctor had examined her.
Victoria spoke with chilling calm.
“You became too familiar with my mother-in-law. You started giving opinions, asking about her trust, and behaving as if kindness made you family.”
Emily looked at Evelyn.
“She asked me to read her mail because you kept hiding it.”
Richard’s eyes narrowed.
Victoria accused Emily of manipulating a lonely old woman for money.
It was the family’s favorite weapon: if a poor employee showed loyalty, they called it ambition.
Richard opened the bedside drawer and found a signed guardianship petition.
It requested authority over both Evelyn and Emily.
If approved, Victoria could place Evelyn in private care and have Emily removed as a dangerous influence.
Then Evelyn’s phone vibrated beneath the sheets.
