Chapter 5 - THE ROOM BUILT FOR INCONVENIENT WOMEN.
The nursery wall concealed a narrow passage leading to a locked medical room.
Evelyn sat inside, weak but conscious, with an IV beside her and stacks of unsigned documents on the table.
She looked at Victoria and said, “You finally brought Richard to witness your crime.”
Victoria insisted Evelyn had agreed to rest privately.
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“You mean you sedated me until my signature looked cooperative.”
The documents transferred control of the Ashford housing trust to Victoria’s son, Charles.
That trust owned apartment buildings across Boston occupied by working families.
Evelyn had planned to block their sale to luxury developers.
Victoria called the tenants a financial burden.
“They pay below market and still complain. Gratitude disappears fastest in poor neighborhoods.”
Emily answered, “Because rent is not charity when people pay it every month.”
Richard found eviction lists beside the transfer papers.
Thousands of families would be removed within ninety days.
The development company purchasing the buildings belonged to Charles.
Then Evelyn revealed why Emily had been targeted.
Emily’s late mother had been the accountant who discovered the first fraudulent transfer.
She died after being blamed for missing money.
Evelyn had hired Emily not out of pity, but because she intended to restore her mother’s name.
Then the hidden-room camera began recording.
