Chapter 3 - THE DOCTOR WHO SIGNED BEFORE ARRIVING.
Dr. Samuel Pike arrived before the ambulance.
He carried no medical bag.
He carried legal papers.
Victoria introduced him as the family’s trusted physician, but Emily had seen him only once—leaving the Ashford study after midnight.
Pike barely examined Evelyn before announcing that her condition was likely caused by age and emotional stress.
Richard placed the medication packet in front of him.
“Why was my mother given a drug prescribed to Emily?”
Pike glanced at Victoria.
“That employee has a history of confusion.”
Emily stepped forward.
“My history began ten minutes ago when you typed it.”
Victoria’s voice sharpened.
“Do not speak to a doctor that way. People like you survive because families like ours give you work.”
Emily answered through tears.
“No. People like me survive despite families like yours deciding our fear is part of the salary.”
Richard demanded Evelyn’s full records.
Pike refused, citing privacy.
Then Emily opened the legal papers he carried.
The guardianship hearing had already been scheduled for the next morning.
Evelyn was described as permanently incapacitated.
The certification bore Pike’s signature.
It was dated three days earlier—when Evelyn had attended dinner, spoken clearly, and signed checks.
Richard looked up.
“You declared her incompetent before she collapsed.”
Then the bedroom intercom clicked on.
