Margaret Cole entered through the ballroom doors wearing a silver blouse and the expression of a woman whose denial had finally become too expensive.
Ethan stared at her.
“You called him?”
“I called the one man you couldn’t bribe.”
For years, Margaret had defended Ethan whenever Lena complained about his threats. She called him stressed, misunderstood, and burdened by responsibility.
When a wealthy son lost control, she called it pressure.
When Lena cried, Margaret called it manipulation.
Now Margaret looked at Mia trembling beside Nora and could no longer hide behind family reputation.
Ethan’s voice turned vicious.
“You chose a waitress’s daughter over your own blood?”
Lena’s mother had cleaned banquet rooms in the same hotel. Ethan had repeated that fact whenever he wanted Lena to feel temporary.
Margaret answered quietly.
“I chose the child you were about to rob.”
She produced a sealed trust amendment. Lena’s late father had left Mia shares in Cole Hospitality, but Ethan secretly redirected the dividends into a development fund.
The amendment restored Mia’s voting rights and suspended Ethan if coercion occurred.
Ethan called it invalid.
Victor placed the cane recording beside the document.
“Your own voice proves coercion.”
Then Nora stepped forward with a hospital bracelet.
It carried Lena’s name and tomorrow’s date.
