Margaret had signed a stack of foundation documents three days earlier.
Dr. Pike told her they funded emergency care for children whose parents were temporarily unfit.
One page transferred guardianship authority over Mia to a Cole-controlled private trust.
Margaret had not read it.
Ethan smiled bitterly.
“You see? Mother always signs when the family name is at risk.”
Lena looked at her.
“You didn’t need to hate my daughter. You only needed to care less than the people asking for your signature.”
The words hurt because they were true.
Margaret had spent decades calling carelessness a privilege of leadership. Employees were fired for minor errors while family members signed away lives and blamed assistants.
Victor ordered the entire foundation archive preserved.
Nora revealed the guardianship program had targeted more than Mia. Twelve children from low-income families had been removed after their parents disputed medical bills or workplace injuries.
The Cole Foundation then used those children in fundraising campaigns.
Celeste defended the program.
“We gave them better homes.”
Nora answered, “You stole children from poor parents and called the mansion an apology.”
Mr. Harris opened an old employee locker behind the elevator panel.
Inside were sealed custody files and pension records hidden by his late wife.
One file carried Mia’s photograph.
Another carried Lena’s childhood photograph.
