Chapter 3 - The Husband Who Knew Too Little

Every face in the foyer turned toward Vincent.
Helena smiled as though she had finally forced Laura to see the man she married.
“Ask your protector how long he has benefited from the money he claims to defend.”
Vincent admitted the private company carried his name, but insisted Helena’s board had created it without his active approval.
Laura stared at him.
“You sign annual reports. You attend meetings. You accepted dividends.”
“I believed the fund was legally managed.”
Mason’s answer was blunt.
“Poor workers are told ignorance does not excuse a signature. Billionaires call the same ignorance delegation.”
Vincent accepted the blow.
Laura revealed that the fund came from mandatory deductions taken from housekeepers, drivers, ski instructors and maintenance crews across Ashcroft resorts.
Employees were promised health care, retirement housing and emergency aid.
Instead, Helena used the money to finance private jets, political donations and luxury developments.
Derek sneered.
“Those employees received paychecks. They do not become owners because they folded towels and shoveled snow.”
Laura’s fury filled the room.
“They kept your resorts open during avalanches, recessions and wildfires. Your family inherited their sacrifice, then called them replaceable.”
Vincent ordered his company interest frozen and surrendered voting authority pending investigation.
Helena called him weak.
“You will destroy an American institution to impress a woman whose family served drinks in our lobby.”
Vincent answered, “If theft is the institution, it deserves to fall.”
The recovered drive contained a second video.
It showed Mason disabling one foyer camera shortly before Derek arrived.
Laura turned toward the security chief.
“You knew I would be trapped.”
Mason lowered his eyes.
May you like
“Yes.”
Then he added, “But Helena was holding my daughter.”
