Chapter 4 - The Guard Who Waited Too Long
Mason explained that his eighteen-year-old daughter attended an Ashcroft-funded boarding school.
Helena threatened to accuse the girl of theft and cancel her scholarship unless Mason disabled the camera and stayed near the staircase.
He secretly left one backup recorder active, hoping to collect evidence without exposing his daughter.
Laura looked at him with cold disappointment.
“You watched Derek lock the doors because you wanted a cleaner case.”
Mason did not defend himself.
“I chose my daughter while you paid the price.”
Helena laughed.
“Now the servants are turning on one another. That is what happens when people without breeding receive responsibility.”
Mason faced her.
“No. That is what happens when people with money manufacture desperation, then blame the desperate for making ugly choices.”
His backup recorder captured Helena instructing Derek to frighten Laura, seize the documents and stage a public breakdown.
It also recorded another plan.
If Vincent resisted, Helena intended to declare him mentally impaired and take control of Ashcroft Holdings.
Derek demanded immunity for testifying against her.
Laura’s answer was merciless.
“You found honesty only after the gates locked behind you. Cooperation may reduce your sentence. It will not turn you into a hero.”
Federal investigators arrested Derek for unlawful confinement, coercion and evidence tampering.
Helena’s attorneys insisted she had never entered the mansion.
Then Mason produced location data from her private phone.
It showed Helena had been beneath the estate during the confrontation.
Vincent ordered security to open a sealed elevator behind the staircase.
The elevator descended into a hidden medical wing.
