Chapter 6 - The Father Who Built the Lie
Vincent’s father, Arthur Ashcroft, had been celebrated as the businessman who saved thousands of mountain jobs.
The footage revealed he ordered Samuel and Michael onto the lift to retrieve evidence hidden in the control station.
Arthur then activated the emergency shutdown remotely, intending to frighten them into surrendering the worker charter.
Michael fell during the mechanical failure.
Samuel survived and disappeared with the documents.
Vincent stared at his father’s recorded command.
“My entire inheritance began with that night.”
Helena defended Arthur.
“He made an impossible decision to preserve the company.”
Elena’s voice cut through her.
“Rich men always call theft impossible decisions after workers have already paid with their bodies.”
The federal court froze Ashcroft Holdings and installed temporary worker oversight.
Employees arrived at the mansion carrying old pay stubs, denied medical claims and retirement statements reduced to zero.
A retired housekeeper faced Helena.
“My husband died waiting for heart surgery while your foundation purchased another plane.”
Helena snapped, “You were compensated for your labor.”
The woman answered, “You paid wages. We paid for your survival.”
The worker council voted to remove Helena and Vincent from automatic leadership.
Vincent accepted.
Helena called the vote mob rule.
Laura replied, “You loved democracy when workers voted with their labor and you counted the profits.”
Then Samuel Cole entered the hearing alive.
He carried the original charter and a sealed letter from Arthur.
The letter stated that Laura was not Michael Bennett’s biological daughter.
She was Arthur Ashcroft’s child.
