Chapter 5 - The Mother Beneath the Mansion
Laura ran into the hidden medical room, but doctors stopped her until Elena was stable.
Helena claimed Elena had entered treatment voluntarily after developing delusions about employee money.
Elena looked through the glass and raised one shaking hand.
“She locked me here because I kept the original payroll records.”
Laura faced Helena.
“You declared my mother dead while she was breathing beneath your floors.”
Helena answered, “She was a laundromat owner with fantasies of controlling a global company.”
Elena’s voice came through the room speaker.
“I balanced your hotel accounts before you learned to sign your name.”
The records showed Elena’s husband, Michael Bennett, had organized workers during Ashcroft Resorts’ 1998 bankruptcy.
Employees surrendered wages to save the company in exchange for fifty-one percent ownership.
The Ashcrofts later erased the charter and described the worker money as a family rescue loan.
Michael died in a ski-lift maintenance accident shortly after threatening to sue.
Helena called his death tragic.
Elena replied, “You called every worker death tragic after making it profitable.”
Vincent remembered his father ordering the accident file sealed.
He had never opened it.
Laura looked at him through tears.
“You inherited the power to ask every question and chose not to open one envelope.”
Vincent said nothing because no apology could change that truth.
Investigators recovered Michael’s original helmet camera.
The footage showed someone cutting power to the lift before the accident.
The figure wore an Ashcroft security jacket.
Mason recognized the man.
It was his father, Samuel Cole.
Samuel had supposedly died the same night.
