Chapter 9 - The Foundation Wearing Laura’s Name
Laura had founded the Bennett Foundation to provide legal help for low-income employees injured on luxury properties.
Arthur’s attorneys handled the incorporation and buried transfer authority inside hundreds of pages.
The foundation became a laundering channel for the same system Laura believed she was fighting.
Helena released the documents publicly and called Laura a hypocrite.
News outlets repeated the accusation before reviewing the evidence.
Laura faced the cameras.
“I signed papers I failed to understand. I will not hide behind good intentions because poor defendants are never given that luxury.”
She surrendered control to an elected survivor board and opened every record.
Elena told her, “Responsibility is not the same as guilt.”
Laura answered, “No. But responsibility is what stops innocence from becoming another shield.”
The survivor board discovered the network selected working-class heirs, placed them near wealthy families and used marriage, medical orders or custody threats to absorb their claims.
Laura and Vincent had not been the only arranged union.
Derek had been assigned to another employee descendant before Helena redirected him toward Laura.
Mason’s father had hidden a master list inside Arthur’s mountain bunker.
Investigators opened the bunker and found photographs of twenty-eight couples.
Each marriage connected stolen worker ownership to an old-money dynasty.
The final photograph showed Elena Bennett marrying Arthur Ashcroft in secret.
The date was two years after Laura’s birth.
If the marriage was valid, Laura—not Vincent or Helena—legally owned the entire Ashcroft estate.
Elena looked at her daughter.
“I never told you because Arthur made me promise the workers would inherit first.”
