Chapter 1 - The Call They Couldn’t Stop

Laura held the divorce papers at the top of the oak staircase and faced the husband who had controlled every dollar, every phone call and every door for six years.
“I sent copies to my lawyer.”
Mark grabbed her arm.
“You are not leaving with my money. Women like you marry rich men, then act offended when gratitude is expected.”
“It was never your money alone,” Laura replied. “I built your company while you put your name on my work.”
Mark shoved her shoulder.
She slipped down three steps and landed beside the scattered documents.
“Mom!” Sophie screamed from behind the railing.
Mark rushed down and demanded the originals while Eleanor calmly lifted her wineglass.
“Take the papers before she calls the police.”
Laura raised two fingers and glanced toward the landline.
Sophie understood.
She pressed the emergency button and cried, “911, my dad pushed my mom down the stairs.”
Mark moved toward her, but sirens rose outside.
Eleanor dropped her glass.
“They are here,” Sophie whispered.
Then one divorce page slid beneath Mark’s shoe.
Across the top were the words: CONFIDENTIAL ACCOUNT—ELEANOR VALE, TRUSTEE.
