Chapter 6 - The Father Who Needed a Sick Child

Mark denied poisoning Sophie.

He claimed Eleanor used his card and handled every household purchase.

Eleanor blamed the nanny, a Salvadoran woman named Rosa who disappeared after Sophie recovered.

Laura remembered Eleanor calling Rosa careless, uneducated and lucky to work for the family.

Police found Rosa living in Texas under another name.

She had fled after discovering the contaminated humidifier.

Eleanor threatened to report her undocumented husband and take their children if she spoke.

Rosa had spent years carrying guilt for leaving Sophie behind.

“You trapped me between one child’s safety and my own children’s survival,” she told Eleanor by video.

Eleanor answered, “You were paid well.”

Rosa’s voice shook with fury.

“You paid me less than your monthly flower budget, then acted as though poverty made my children disposable.”

The contamination kept Sophie sick long enough for Eleanor to create the fraudulent medical documents and seize Laura’s shares.

Mark admitted he knew Sophie’s illnesses helped pressure Laura but claimed he never asked how they were caused.

Laura faced him.

“You heard your daughter struggling to breathe and chose ignorance because her suffering benefited you.”

Federal agents arrested Eleanor for child endangerment, fraud and witness intimidation.

The moment felt satisfying—until Rosa revealed she had mailed proof to someone years earlier.

That person was Sophie’s pediatrician.

The doctor had destroyed the evidence.

And he was Mark’s biological father.
