Chapter 2 - The Mother Who Funded the Cage

Police separated Mark from Laura while Eleanor insisted the fall was a misunderstanding caused by an emotional wife.
“She has always been dramatic,” Eleanor told the officers. “That is what happens when someone raised without refinement enters a family like ours.”
Laura stared at her.
“My mother cleaned offices at night so I could finish college. Do not call sacrifice a lack of refinement.”
Mark claimed Laura had threatened to steal family assets.
The folder told another story.
For years, Eleanor had moved company profits into a private trust while employees lost health coverage and retirement benefits.
Laura found the account after a warehouse worker begged her for help with his daughter’s surgery.
When Laura questioned Mark, he told her poor employees should be grateful they had jobs.
Sophie’s 911 recording captured Eleanor saying, “Take the papers before she calls the police.”
The officer placed Mark in handcuffs.
Eleanor demanded special treatment.
“Do you know who my family is?”
The officer answered, “Tonight, you are a witness in a domestic assault investigation.”
For the first time, her last name failed to open a door.
Then Laura’s lawyer called.
The original divorce file had vanished from his office.
