Chapter 9 - The Wedding That Wasn’t a Wedding

Maria remembered the day shown in the video.

Factory managers told employees they were signing pension enrollment papers at the courthouse.

Women who could not read English were directed through rooms, photographed and handed documents they never received.

Harrison used Maria’s signature to create a secret marriage and claim rights over her property.

Other female workers had been placed into similar legal relationships with executives.

Eleanor called the program “family integration.”

Its purpose was to convert worker ownership into marital assets controlled by wealthy men.

Laura addressed the court.

“You did not marry these women. You used language, immigration status and poverty to steal their names.”

The judge invalidated the marriage certificates and recognized the employee cooperative.

Workers took control of Vale Industries.

Former cleaners, warehouse staff and factory seamstresses entered the boardroom while Eleanor watched from federal custody.

The satisfaction was immediate.

The people she once ordered through service corridors now decided whether her name remained on the building.

They removed it unanimously.

Mark received prison time after pleading guilty to coercion, fraud and obstruction.

Harrison lost his license and faced dozens of new cases.

Laura became temporary counsel to the worker board but refused permanent control.

Then Maria opened an original employee ledger.

Beside Laura’s birth entry was another name.

Maria had delivered twins.

The second child had been placed with Eleanor.

That child was Mark.

Laura looked toward the man who had abused her.

Mark was not only her husband.

He was her biological brother.
