THE HAND AGAINST THE WINDOW / Chapter 10 / 10

Chapter 10 - THE SECOND GIRL ON THE BRIDGE.

Sarah admitted contacting Grant because she believed she could lure him into revealing the guardianship network.

She never authorized Alice’s confinement, but she had used her daughter’s routine without warning Ethan or police.

Alice’s voice trembled.

“You chose my fear because you thought the truth needed it.”

Sarah accepted responsibility and stepped away from the worker board.

“No cause gave me the right to make that choice for you.”

Grant, Mayor Whitmore, Sheriff Price and their attorneys were convicted. Thomas testified without immunity for the contracts he created.

The worker-funded properties became tenant-owned cooperatives. Families recovered housing, settlements and legal records. Maria’s bakery became the first public meeting place for the new board.

Alice’s star charm and missing-person flyer were displayed beneath glass.

A plaque read:

“THEY THOUGHT A WORKING-CLASS CHILD COULD DISAPPEAR WITHOUT THE TOWN ASKING WHO PROFITED.”

At the dedication, Lucy found a second star charm beneath the old bridge map.

Its back carried the initials WMC.

But this one belonged to another missing girl.

The date scratched beneath her name was tomorrow.
