THE HAND AGAINST THE WINDOW / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - THE VOICE INSIDE ALICE’S RECORDING.

Thomas Bennett returned after years away and admitted working as the foundation’s property attorney.

He said he signed the eviction orders to stop Mayor Whitmore from selling the buildings to an outside developer.

Maria stared at him.

“You protected our bakery by giving another rich man the right to take it whenever he wanted.”

Thomas had also helped create the scholarship guardianship contracts. He claimed he believed children would receive better opportunities.

Lucy stepped beside her mother.

“Better for who?”

Thomas could not answer.

Workers whose wages funded the properties formed an independent board. Sarah refused automatic leadership despite exposing the scheme.

“Truth does not make me owner of everyone else’s sacrifice.”

The board canceled the eviction, returned leases to tenants and placed the foundation under court supervision.

Mayor Whitmore offered names in exchange for protecting his fortune.

The workers refused.

Then Alice’s recording was enhanced.

A woman’s voice told Grant where to find her.

Ethan recognized it.

It belonged to Sarah.

Alice turned toward her mother.

“Why did you tell him where I would be?”
