Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE THAT LOCKED SARAH AWAY.
The highway collision that supposedly killed Sarah had been followed by a closed casket and sealed medical records.
Mayor Whitmore’s foundation had paid every expense.
Sarah was located in a private rehabilitation residence under another name. She was conscious and able to testify, but had spent years being told Ethan and Alice were safer without her.
The residence director claimed Sarah had chosen privacy after a breakdown.
Sarah answered, “They called me unstable because I could read their accounts.”
She explained that scholarship money was taken from payroll deductions paid by factory workers, hotel staff and hospital employees. The Whitmores used those funds to buy guardianship rights over children who later inherited injury settlements or housing trusts.
Ethan asked why she had never contacted them.
“They threatened to remove Alice and charge you with helping me steal.”
Alice took her mother’s hand but did not pretend the lost years could disappear.
Then Sarah opened the notebook’s hidden cover.
It contained a transfer order signed by Ethan.
