Ethan pulled Lucy inside the bakery while her mother locked the front door.
The dark sedan continued down the street without stopping.
Sheriff Daniel Price arrived and examined the star charm. When Lucy described the driver, he dismissed the account as a frightened child’s guess.
“She probably saw a family leaving town.”
Lucy’s mother, Maria Bennett, stiffened.
“If a wealthy child spoke, you would call her a witness. Because my daughter helps in a bakery, you call her confused.”
Price replied that accusations could damage respected families.
Ethan pointed to the letters on the charm.
“What does WMC mean?”
The sheriff claimed he did not know, but Maria recognized the initials from delivery invoices.
Whitmore Motor Club occupied private land beyond the old bridge. Its members included judges, donors and Mayor Charles Whitmore.
Price ordered Ethan to remain away from the property.
Then Lucy looked through the bakery window.
