Chapter 2 - The Mother They Planned to Blame
Vanessa Carlisle arrived at the hospital wearing a cream designer suit and carrying an emergency guardianship petition that had been prepared before Sophie’s breathing crisis, yet she acted shocked when Officer Reed asked why the document described an incident that had not occurred when the attorney drafted it.
She told the doctors that Claire was financially unstable, emotionally overwhelmed and frequently absent because she worked long hours, carefully turning every sacrifice Claire made to support Sophie into evidence that a wealthy relative could provide a more appropriate home.
Claire listened as Vanessa compared her modest duplex, public insurance plan and used car with the Carlisle estate, as though marble bathrooms and private chefs could erase the fact that Vanessa had moved lifesaving medicine beyond a frightened child’s reach.
The family attorney produced messages appearing to show Claire threatening to take Sophie away unless the Carlisles released millions from Nathan’s trust, but Claire denied writing them and pointed out that the punctuation matched Vanessa’s texts rather than her own.
Mrs. Dawson tried to defend Claire, only for Vanessa to remind the hospital that the caregiver depended on Carlisle money for her apartment and medical coverage, reducing an elderly woman’s testimony to the size of the paycheck used to control her.
Officer Reed recovered the security camera’s memory card from the townhouse, but the crucial twenty minutes had been deleted using an administrator password registered to Claire, even though phone records proved she had been across town when the system was accessed.

Sophie began crying when Vanessa approached her bed, then admitted that her aunt had ordered her to say Claire forgot to refill the inhaler and promised that she could live in a mansion with a swimming pool after the court removed her mother.
