Chapter 5 - The Woman Wearing Her Coat
Investigators traced the disguised woman to Vanessa’s personal assistant, who admitted she had been ordered to wear Claire’s clothes, accept the defective inhaler and appear on neighborhood cameras while Claire attended a school counseling conference forty miles away.
Vanessa promised the assistant a promotion and threatened to blacklist her from every major employer in Richmond if she refused, knowing that a working woman with student debt could not easily challenge a family whose friends controlled banks, hospitals and newspapers.
The assistant also confessed that she poured water beside Sophie, removed the inhaler from the backpack and instructed Mrs. Dawson not to call Claire until Vanessa’s attorney confirmed the guardianship petition had been filed.
Mrs. Dawson said she tried to retrieve the medicine after Sophie began wheezing, but Vanessa had placed it in the highest cabinet and warned that police would blame the elderly caregiver if she interfered with a “court-authorized family assessment.”
At the emergency hearing, Vanessa’s lawyers argued that the assistant was a resentful employee seeking immunity, while describing Mrs. Dawson as confused and Claire as financially motivated, dismissing every woman without inherited wealth through a different version of the same insult.
Officer Reed presented the hospital records, tablet audio and recalled inhaler, but the judge hesitated because Carlisle Medical funded a respiratory wing bearing his late wife’s name and his campaign had received donations from company executives.

Sophie finally asked to speak and told the judge that her aunt had watched her search for the inhaler without helping, then promised a pony if she told doctors that Claire had forgotten to refill it.
The judge suspended Vanessa’s guardianship petition, but before granting Claire permanent custody, he opened a sealed amendment allegedly signed by Nathan one week before his death, declaring his wife medically unfit and naming Vanessa as Sophie’s sole guardian.
