Chapter 6 - Signed After the Funeral

Claire recognized Nathan’s signature, but the amendment carried a digital timestamp dated eleven days after rescue crews declared him dead, forcing the Carlisle attorney to claim that a delayed corporate server had recorded the document incorrectly.

A handwriting expert found that the signature had been copied from Nathan’s life-insurance form, while the notary admitted she witnessed nothing and approved the document after Vanessa threatened to cancel her husband’s retirement benefits.

The amendment also contained a psychiatric evaluation describing Claire as paranoid, manipulative and dangerously obsessed with medical conspiracies, signed by a specialist she had never met but who served on the Carlisle Foundation board.

When confronted, the psychiatrist insisted that family interviews provided enough information for an emergency opinion, exposing how easily professionals could turn wealthy gossip into clinical authority while poor parents waited months for legitimate care.

Mrs. Dawson led Claire back to the townhouse and showed her a false panel behind the coffee cabinet where Nathan had hidden a document pouch before his final flight, telling the caregiver to protect it if the family ever endangered Sophie.

Inside were original trust papers naming Claire as sole guardian, engineering reports on defective inhalers and payment records showing that Carlisle Medical had redirected public health funds into luxury properties owned by Vanessa.

Nathan had also recorded a message apologizing for ignoring Claire’s warnings because he believed his relatives would never risk a child’s life simply to preserve voting control over the company.

His final instruction directed Claire to contact a federal investigator using a number written beneath the pouch, but when she called, Officer Reed’s phone rang inside his pocket.

Reed looked at Claire and admitted that he had not entered the townhouse by coincidence, because Nathan recruited him months earlier to investigate the Carlisles—and Nathan’s final message said his plane crash had been arranged from inside the family.
