Chapter 4 - The Inhaler That Was Never Prescribed
The hospital pharmacist examined the blue inhaler Claire found in the cabinet and discovered that although Sophie’s name appeared on the label, the canister belonged to a recalled batch manufactured by Carlisle Medical, the company controlled by Vanessa and her father.
The device contained almost no medication, which meant Sophie’s brief improvement came only after the paramedic used a properly supplied rescue treatment, while the inhaler placed in the cabinet had been designed to look convincing without providing meaningful protection.
Vanessa accused Claire of planting the defective canister to damage the company, and several Carlisle board members repeated the claim publicly before investigators had even completed the pharmacy analysis.
News reports described Claire as an angry widow seeking control of a fortune, while television commentators discussed her salary, childhood neighborhood and lack of corporate experience more often than the child who had struggled to breathe.
Claire revealed that before marrying Nathan, she worked as a hospital patient advocate and had reported Carlisle Medical for billing low-income families for defective breathing equipment that was frequently replaced only when wealthy patients complained.
The complaint disappeared after the hospital received a large Carlisle donation, Claire lost her position during a “departmental restructuring,” and Nathan’s relatives began treating her as a social climber who hated successful people.

Officer Reed then found a pharmacy delivery record showing that the false inhaler had been signed into the townhouse by Claire, yet the attached doorbell image showed a woman wearing Claire’s camel jacket whose face remained hidden beneath a wide hat.
