Chapter 8 - The Caregiver’s Second Betrayal
Claire turned toward Mrs. Dawson with disbelief, while the elderly caregiver collapsed into a kitchen chair and admitted that she had known Nathan survived the crash but believed the Carlisles would kill him if she told anyone.
Vanessa offered to keep Nathan alive, pay Mrs. Dawson’s medical bills and protect her grandson’s settlement only if she reported Claire’s movements, copied Sophie’s records and ensured the mother appeared overwhelmed during every court evaluation.
Mrs. Dawson insisted that she moved the inhaler only because Vanessa claimed the canister in Sophie’s backpack was contaminated, never realizing the replacement was nearly empty until the child began gasping beside the dishwasher.
Claire told her that fear explained the betrayal but did not erase it, because loyalty purchased with another child’s breath remained a choice whose consequences Sophie would remember long after the court case ended.
Mrs. Dawson surrendered a small recorder containing conversations with Vanessa, Carlisle executives and the rehabilitation director, explaining that guilt finally became stronger than the fear of losing the medicine keeping her own heart stable.
The recordings exposed a network that used healthcare debt to control caregivers, employees and low-income patients, offering treatment only when vulnerable families signed false statements protecting Carlisle Medical.
Federal agents raided the rehabilitation facility, rescued Nathan and recovered manufacturing records proving the company knowingly distributed ineffective inhalers to clinics serving families least able to hire attorneys.
