Chapter 2 - THE PROMISE BURIED BENEATH THE STAIRS.
The photograph showed Nora’s mother, Elaine Hale, standing outside a union legal clinic in Ohio only six weeks earlier.
Nora’s hands trembled, but her voice did not.
“You let me believe she abandoned me.”
Charles said Elaine accepted money to leave after discovering confidential family records.
Vivian laughed with relief.
“So this is blackmail from a maid’s daughter.”
Nora turned the photograph over. Elaine had written one sentence:
THE HOUSE BELONGS TO THE PEOPLE WHO KEPT IT ALIVE.
The silver key opened a narrow door behind the butler’s pantry. Inside were payroll books, loan documents and a wall of employee names. During the Ashford bankruptcy, cooks, maids, gardeners and drivers had surrendered wages to stop the bank from taking the mansion.
In return, Charles’s father promised them ownership shares.
Vivian called the promise symbolic.
Nora answered, “Your family used real wages. The repayment cannot become imaginary.”
One ledger page had been cut out.
Charles knew who removed it.
