Chapter 9 - THE DAUGHTER TRAINED AS A WEAPON.
Elaine explained that Nora’s scholarship was not random.
Charles’s father created a program selecting one worker’s child to attend law school and defend the cooperative. Elaine chose Nora because she believed her daughter could survive rooms that silenced domestic workers.
Nora’s hurt deepened.
“You planned my life as a legal weapon without telling me.”
Elaine did not hide behind sacrifice.
“I thought purpose would make the secrecy noble. It did not.”
Nora refused automatic leadership and asked the workers to elect outside counsel.
Vivian offered to reveal every corrupt partner if the council allowed her to keep the mansion’s east wing.
Mrs. Doyle replied, “Truth is not rent you pay to remain above consequence.”
Vivian surrendered her files. The evidence implicated Judge Grant, hospital executives and a state senator.
Then a security archive appeared.
It showed Nora entering the sealed records room two nights before she claimed to find the key.
Charles walked beside her and handed her the silver chain.
Vivian stared at them.
“You staged today.”
Nora looked at Charles.
