Chapter 1 - THE SIGNATURE SHE NEVER GAVE.

Marcus crossed the ballroom while wealthy guests stared at his plain shirt and tan trousers as though he had entered through the wrong door.
He stopped beside Emily’s wheelchair and offered his open hand.
“You asked me to come. I will not let anyone choose your life for you again.”
Emily took it willingly, tears rising.
“I thought you left me. That is what I was told.”
Richard’s jaw tightened.
“Let go of my daughter. You were never welcome here.”
Marcus did not move closer.
“I did not leave her. You told me she never wanted to see me again.”
Emily turned toward her father.
“Dad, you kept him away from me?”
Richard could not answer.
Then Marcus placed a sealed envelope on Emily’s lap. Inside were two years of returned letters, unopened birthday cards and a court notice barring him from contacting her.
The petition described Marcus as dangerous and financially motivated.
Emily read the signature at the bottom.
