Chapter 5 - THE LAND HER FATHER NEEDED HER TO SURRENDER.
Nathan denied planning Emily’s incapacity. He said Richard feared she would transfer company shares to a community housing trust after marrying Marcus.
Emily turned to her father.
“You did not separate us because you feared he would use me. You feared I would choose differently.”
Her late mother had left her thirty-five percent of Ashford Development, with a clause allowing Emily to convert company land into accessible housing.
Richard needed her vote for a luxury project that would displace hundreds of working-class tenants.
Marcus had helped residents organize against it. His firing, blocked hospital visits and the guardianship petition all began after Emily agreed to support them.
Denise placed eviction notices on the champagne table.
“We were told the project would improve the neighborhood. Improvement meant removing everyone who could not afford the result.”
The board suspended Richard and Nathan.
Then Emily’s attorney found an agreement moving her shares to Richard if she married without family approval.
