Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER WHO CALLED WAITING TEMPORARY.
Emily’s mother, Grace Ashford, had created the investment account before her death.
Grace publicly championed disability rights while agreeing that accessibility funds could be invested until redevelopment profits arrived.
The tenants were expected to wait.
Denise faced Emily.
“My mother waited on the fourth floor until her heart failed. Your family called the elevator delay temporary.”
Emily did not hide behind ignorance.
“Return every dollar connected to me before anyone discusses my inheritance.”
The board placed her distributions under restitution review and elected tenant and worker representatives to oversee the fund.
Marcus admitted Grace once offered him a scholarship if he stopped organizing against the redevelopment.
He refused, but never told Emily because he feared she would defend her mother.
Emily’s hurt was immediate.
“You trusted my father’s prejudice more than my judgment.”
Marcus accepted responsibility.
“I thought silence would protect us. It only gave your family more silence to use.”
