Chapter 3 - THE ENGAGEMENT BUILT ON A LIE.
Emily stared at Nathan across the ballroom. He had been standing among the guests, waiting to announce their engagement after the charity dinner.
“You knew I was asking for Marcus.”
Nathan admitted Richard told him Marcus had abandoned her after learning she might not walk again.
Marcus looked at the wheelchair, then at Emily.
“I loved you before the collision. I came back because you asked—not because I expected you to become someone else.”
Richard accused him of performing devotion for the room.
Emily replied, “You keep calling his respect a performance because control is the only love you recognize.”
Hospital records showed Nathan had recommended temporary guardianship during Emily’s rehabilitation. Richard used that recommendation to take control of her phone, finances and visitor list.
Nathan insisted it was medically prudent.
A disability-rights attorney among the guests asked whether Emily had independent counsel.
She had not.
Then Marcus revealed why Richard feared him.
